The South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special
Needs (SCDDSN) is the state agency that provides services to
children and adults with severe lifelong disabilities. The mission
of SCDDSN is to assist people with disabilities and their families
through choice in meeting needs, pursuing possibilities and
achieving life goals; and minimize the occurrence and reduce the
severity of disabilities through prevention.
The criteria designated in the South Carolina Code of
Laws indicate seven (7) categories of eligibility for services from
SCDDSN. Those categories are:
Intellectual Disability
Related Disability (i.e., a disability related to an
Intellectual Disability)
High Risk Infants
Autism Spectrum Disorders
Head Injury (i.e., Traumatic Brain Injury)
Spinal Cord Injuries
Similar Disabilities (i.e., a disability similar to a head
(traumatic brain) or spinal cord injury)
To be eligible for SCDDSN services you must be a resident
of South Carolina and be confirmed by SCDDSN to meet criteria for
at least one of the disability categories noted above.
